Originally established as a city for railroad workers and their families, Elko, located in the north eastern area of Nevada is the nature enthusiast paradise. Adjacent to Interstate 80, Elko is surrounded by the Ruby Mountains and Lamoile canyon. Guests can experience the old Wild West culture on the American frontier, including Elko’s annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering, a week long event featuring poetry, film, music and art from those whose livelihood depends on caring for the land. Elko is also home to the Ruby Lake Wildlife Refuge where over 37,000 acres of land including marshes and ponds are home to over 200 species of birds and wildlife. In addition, South Fork State Recreation area provides ample space for those interested in water recreation.
